Ismail Quemali 1844-1919 on the banknote of 50 Albanian lek

Albanian lek

The name of the Albanian currency is lek (in pl. lekë). They are introduced in 1926 and are named after Alexander the Great who has been often called Lekë in Albanian. On the banknote of 500 lekë is Ismail Quemali - the leader of the Albanian national movement and one of the founders of the contemporary Albanian state and its first Prime Minister. He has held many high positions in the administration of the Ottoman Empire before that and he has been known by his liberal views. His ideas for democratic reform have provoked a conflict with people of that time who are more conservative and he is sent to prison. Seven years later, he received an amnesty by the Ottoman Porte. Ismail Quemali is one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence of Albania and is part of the formation of the first Albanian government after more than 500 years of Turkish domination.
