Mustafa Kemal Atatürk 1881 – 1938 on the banknote of 100 new Turkish lira

Turkish lira

Mustafa Kemal is a Turkish general and politician, a founder and president of The Republic of Turkey. Some of his biographers claim that he comes from a Bulgarian-Muslim family. He participates in WWI and in 1920 forms a caretaker government. After two years, he officially eradicates the Sultan power and proclaims The Turkish Republic. Throughout his 15 years of government service, he has made reforms in the political, social, judicial and economic spheres without an analogue in any other country: he replaces the Arabic alphabet with the Latin one; he introduces the modern secular state; he prohibits the wearing of headscarves and fezzes in public buildings and institutions; he establishes women equality. He accepts the name Atatürk, which means “the father of Turkish people” in 1935. He governs until his death in 1938. Today his portrait is printed on every Turkish banknote in circulation.
