Dionisio Herrera 1781 – 1850 on the banknote of 20 lempira
Lempira is the official currency of Honduras since 1931 when it has replaced the peso. On the banknote of 20 lempira is Dionisio Herrera, the first president of Honduras. He is a graduated lawyer from the University of San Carlos Borromeo in Guatemala and is the author of the Honduras Declaration of independence. He is chosen for the first president and holds the position for three years. Throughout his government, slavery is abolished (this happens quite a long time before that in the States) and special attention is paid to human rights. He is overthrown in a coup that is lead by the vice president. Herrera is thrown into prison in Guatemala. A year later, he is released and chosen for a president of Nicaragua. It is regarded that his library was one of the most substantial and valuable in Latin America. To our regret, this library is not available today - the political opponents of Herrera decide to burn all books because they claimed that there are heretical texts in it. |
